Dr. James Campbell Named Recipient of the 2015 Amanda Dempsey Award

It is with great pleasure that we announce our very own Dr. James Campbell as the recipient of the annual Amanda Dempsey Award. Named in honor of Amanda Dempsey, mother of the famous actor Patrick Dempsey, this award recognizes cancer survivors who have shown extraordinary dedication to helping others navigate the challenges associated with this disease. The award will be presented to Dr. Campbell at the annual Dempsey Challenge, the primary fundraising event for The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing. Dr. Campbell will join Dempsey (formerly known as McDreamy from the hit sitcom “Grey’s Anatomy") for a quarter-mile walk following his acceptance of the award.

Said Dr. Campbell: “I am surprised, humbled and honored to be recognized by such a wonderful group who understands the full range of cancer care: prevention, detection and support.”

As a two-time melanoma survivor, Dr. Campbell understands the difficulties that this disease can bring to one’s life. With this experience, Dr. Campbell not only brings extraordinary dedication and compassion to his clinical practice, but seeks to extend his passion into the community, through involvement in numerous educational and prevention initiatives. In 2014, he helped to create the action-oriented non-profit organization “Make Big Change” which works to increase social awareness of skin cancer, including the education of school-age children. Dr. Campbell has also been fundamental in the creation of The Global Sunscreen Initiative, a program that has placed over 100 free sunscreen dispensers across New England. Many regard Dr. Campbell not only as a doctor, but also as a mentor and a friend.
